With life safety as a primary goal, the Village recently adopted an ordinance requiring fire suppression sprinklers to be installed in newly constructed one- and two-family homes and to homes with additions adding 50 percent or more area to the home. The requirements also apply to all new commercial construction.
Smoke alarms are standard safety tools and are essential in every home. But they can only detect a fire. Fire sprinklers detect the fire and automatically control it, saving lives and property. The typical cost for a residential fire sprinkler system is approximately $2.50 per square foot. In a typical modern 3,000 square foot home, that would be about $7,500; less than the cost to remodel kitchen or bathroom.
