Sky Lanterns Banned in Illinois

sky lantern

Sky lanterns are on the State's "Prohibited consumer Fireworks" list. Sky lanterns (also known as floating lanterns or wishing lanterns) are typically made of paper and contain a small candle or fuel cell that, when lit, heats the air in the lantern making it rise into the air. According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, sky lanterns are known to travel up to several miles from there they were originally released. Sky lanterns have been known to cause residential and forest fires and other loses, and pose hazards to aviation and vehicular traffic. It is illegal to sell or use sky lanterns in the State of Illinois. For more information on fireworks laws, please visit the Office of the State Fire Marshal online.
